| Turnage (b.1960):
'Barrie's Deviant Fantasy' for String Quartet & Referee's Whistles
(1995)
Born in 1960, Mark-Anthony Turnage has
achieved international recognition in both concert hall and opera house.
His second full-length opera, The Silver Tassie, based on Sean O'Casey
anti-war play, was premièred to great acclaim at English National
Opera in 2000, and will be revived in the coming season. The short
piece Barrie's Deviant Fantasy for string quartet and referee's whistles
(which are played by second violin and viola) combines two passions of
the composer: Bach and football! Turnage has written on the score
"more messing around with the Fantasia by Bach, BW542", and the piece was
written as a birthday present for a friend, Barrie Gavin, who is also mad
about football. |
